Kiawah Island was named for the Kiawah Indians, who inhabited the island before the arrival of the English in South Carolina. In , John Stanyarne, a wealthy planter who lived on Johns Island, bought the half of Kiawah Island that had been owned by Captain Raynor and, in , bought the remaining half that had been owned by Captain Davis. Stanyarne and subsequent owners raised cattle and produced crops on Kiawah through the use of slave labor until the practice was abolished.
In , the island was sold to C. Raynor was a pirate known for raiding faraway places, including the Red Sea and Madagascar. He eventually made his way to the Carolinas, where he decided to change his pirating ways and settle on the quiet Island of Kiawah. Lords Proprietors were high-ranking men appointed by English rule to create settlements in the New World. In , these powerful men came to Kiawah and traded simple goods such as hatchets, cloth materials, and beads with the natives to purchase the Island.
When the English arrived in , the Cassique was able to convince the colonists to change their plans of settling south of Kiawah, near present-day Beaufort. At the time, the Spanish claimed this area and eventually destroyed a Scottish colony where the English had also planned to settle. Instead, the colonists settled north of Kiawah at Charlestowne Landing, and were influential in creating the city of Charleston.
These natives inhabited the Island for decades in the early s before the English arrived in Today, we pay homage to these influential ancestors with the naming of the Cassique golf course and Cassique enclaves. All homes are intentionally built to reflect their environment and compliment the scenery, rather than compete with it.
A commitment Kiawah made long ago to preserve the beauty and integrity of this otherworldly place. The first shots of the Civil War, fired on April 2, , could be heard on Kiawah Island coming from Fort Sumter, located just 21 miles away.
The Vanderhorst legacy ended in when C. In , the land was developed into a world-class resort and residential area. In , the current ownership purchased the portions of Kiawah Island that compose the Resort. In , The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island opened. And the nice part of it is that the remaining real estate is some of the best that Kiawah has ever offered.
The homes sit well back across the marsh, preserving the views and the serenity of the course. The 10,acre island also is the rare oceanside property where the beach is getting bigger. Because it is a depositional barrier island rather than an erosional one, the tides and surf add more sand than they remove, creating striking dunes covered with long-stalked sea oats that dance in the ocean breezes.
One study found that the island gained as much as seven million cubic yards of sand over a period of 16 years. The master plan has always been to create value by maximizing the natural environment and the protection of wildlife.
With its miles of oceanfront, maritime forests, and salt marsh, few places are as rich in natural beauty. Initial zoning allowed for 12, residential units, but a previous ownership group had cut that by more than half to preserve the natural habitat and make the homes even more valuable for the current 4, property owners.
